Dordt SID Earns GPAC Honor

(Wednesday, June 28; Sioux Center, Iowa) Mike Byker of Dordt College (Iowa) has been selected as the 2016-17 Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Sports Information Director of the Year.  The award is voted on by the league’s sports information directors.  He will be honored at the 2017 GPAC Football Media Day on Thursday, August 3 in South Sioux City, Nebraska at the Marina Inn.

“When I look at the SID’s we have across this league I am truly humbled to receive this award,” said Byker.  “As a group we push each other to be better and because of that our schools and league thrive.”

Byker has been at Dordt College since 2001 and also serves as Sports Director for KDCR Radio. Known as the “Voice of the Defenders’, Byker promotes 18 varsity and two club sports at Dordt College.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with athletes, coaches and athletic administrators who trust me to tell their stories while also experimenting with new avenues in telling those stories.  The series this spring using video interviews of senior athletes was well received and left me wishing I had committed to it long ago,” said Byker. “This is an exciting time in our industry as it changes and evolves.”

Byker maintains the Dordt College athletic website as well as coordinating live athletic broadcasts both on KDCR and online.  Byker also oversees the Defender social media platforms and is involved in ad sales for Defender printed programs.

“I am very excited for Mike to win this award,” said Dordt College Athletic Director Glenn Bouma.  “He goes above and beyond working many hours to promote our student-athletes. Defender Nation is very grateful to Mike for his work both on the air and off as he is a huge asset for Dordt College and very deserving of this award from the GPAC.”

Byker is an active member of Co-SIDA and has worked on-site assisting the NAIA Volleyball and Women’s Division II Basketball Championship Tournaments in Sioux City, Iowa as a media coordinator and play by play voice on the NAIA Network.

“Mike is very deserving of this award in the GPAC and has a great passion for his work at Dordt College,” said GPAC Commissioner Corey Westra. “The GPAC is successful because of hard-working SID’s like Mike and his colleagues around the league.  He and the other SID’s are critical to the promotion and success of the league day in and day out.”

This is the third year of the GPAC Sports Information Director of the Year award.

Byker is a 1992 graduate of Dordt College with a BA in Radio/TV Communication. He and his wife Maria, live in Orange City, Iowa and have three children, Klay, Sam and Emma.

“I’ve had great support from my family—Maria and my children have pitched in at one time or another while I’ve worked and I hope they see the joy I feel in working,” said Byker. “I’ve been fortunate to have worked with Dave Schenk and Katie DeWitt-Severson as assistants in recent school years who have shown me areas I can improve in and I’ve had tremendous student-assistants who rise to the challenge and make it possible to serve Dordt’s athletes and Defender Nation.”
