Dordt College Women's Basketball vs. Morningside

February 26, 2009

(Sioux City, Iowa) For the second year in a row the Dordt women's basketball team bows out of the GPAC post-season tournament after a loss to the Morningside Mustangs, losing tonight by a score of 81-59. The Defenders end the season with a record of 13-17 while the Mustangs, ranked #1 in the NAIA, improve to a perfect 31-0.

The first half was a game of streaks, as Morningside opened the contest by scoring the first 12 points and led the Defenders 12-0 with 16:36 to go in the half. Dordt proceeded to rattle of the next 11 points and a Bailey Spencer lay-up put the score at 12-11 at the 13:44 mark. A Morningside lay-up would give the Mustangs a 3 point lead at 14-11 until the Defenders struck back outscoring the Mustangs 12-2 over the next 5 minutes to give Dordt a 7 point lead at 23-16 with 7:48 to go in the half. It would be Morningside's turn next, as the Mustangs held Dordt to just 2 field goals and a free-throw over the last 8 minutes, outscoring the Defenders 17-5 to give them a 33-28 lead at half.

The second half opened up with a Laura Nelson 3 pointer for Morningside to push the lead to 8, but Dordt's Amber Soodsma answered right back with a 3 of her own to cut the margin back down to 5. A lay-up by Dordt's lone senior, Kelsie DeNooy at 18:25 cut the lead to 3 at 38-35 but that would be as close as the Defenders would get as Morningside controlled the offensive glass and scored on 3 straight offensive rebounds, giving them a 9 point lead at 44-35 with 15:31 left. Dordt would cut the lead to 7 on two occasions but could get no closer and Morningside went on a 9-0 run to extend the gap to 16 and the Mustangs coasted to the 22 point win.

The loss to the Mustangs would be the third to the top-ranked Mustangs this season and the second time in the last 6 days. The Defenders played a tough schedule this season, "it was a juggernaut of a schedule, we lost only one game since December 10th to a team not ranked in the top 25", said Head Coach Craig Stiemsma. "We had an OK first half but Morningside just keeps coming at you, there is no quit in them. They kept running the floor and you have to give them a lot of credit. Brittany Williamson was the difference tonight, scoring 26 points in 28 minutes of play. I am very proud of our team, I think we consistently got better throughout the season and that is a testament to their willingness to work. We certainly will miss Kelsie (DeNooy; Senior/Denver, Colorado), she has been a solid presence inside, a big rebounder and has great character and an excellent work ethic. Replacing her will be like trying to replace 2 or 3 people. We have lots of talent to work with next year and I am thankful and proud of our effort throughout this season."

McKinzie Schmidt led the Defenders in scoring with 17 points and had 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Kate DuMez had 13 points, 6 assists and 3 steals in the contest while Amber Soodsma had 12 points and 8 rebounds. DeNooy fouled out of the game with 6 points, 2 assists and a steal.

Leading the way for the Mustangs was Brittany Williamson with a game high 26 points and 7 rebounds. Laura Nelson finished with 19 and Autumn Bartel tossed in 11.

The Defenders committed 23 turnovers to 14 for the Mustangs and Morningside held a slight 34-32 margin in the rebounding department and also outshot Dordt 47.5% to 41.2%.
