Dordt College Lacrosse vs. Bethel ( KS)
March 31, 2012
(Rochester, Minnesota) Dordt was unable to shake off the defeat to Carleton earlier in the day, and came out flat to start the second game against the Bethel Royals. While Dordt jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, that lead quickly diminished. The Royals were able to come away with some early goals of their own to pull ahead and it would stay that way. Dordt was able to mount a bit of a comeback in the third quarter, but the Royal's defense shut down any chance of a comeback with a key save from their goalie.
"After a brief intermission (referring to the 20 minute break in between games), we came out flat against Bethel and gave up some early goals. We were able to make some adjustments on our defense and kept them for getting too many open looks for the second quarter," said Sowers coach Paul Hoogendoorn.
After the Sowers made some more adjustments at halftime, the Sowers crept up on the Royals with a few goals to bring the score to 6-4.
"The biggest turning point came after we just scored a goal to cut Bethel's lead to 6-4. We had a wide open shot on net after winning the face off, but Bethel's goalie came through with a big save. That set the tone for the second half, and our offense was unable to take advantage of our scoring opportunities and Bethel was able to capitalize on theirs," Hoogendoorn said.
Four Sowers each scored one goal: Mark Opp, Dirk Oudman, David Spencer, and Nate Weigel tallied the goals for the Sowers. Opp also had two assists.
Defensively, it was Alex Geleynse coming up with five key groundball pickups. Jordan Shaffer also had five groundball pickups of his own. Jordan Yntema recorded a .421 save percentage.
