Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Davenport--ACHA D3 National Tournament
March 12, 2010
(Germain Arena, Estero, Florida) Dordt's season comes to a close this afternoon with a 5-1 loss to the Davenport Panthers as the Blades finish off their third straight trip to the ACHA D3 National Tournament. The Blades dropped all three of their pool play games, going 0-3 in the tournament and finished their season with an overall record of 11-11-1-1. Davenport went 1-2 in pool play with two one goal losses, falling to Farmingdale 9-8 on Wednesday and a 4-3 loss to Florida Gulf Coast yesterday after leading 3-0 after the first period.
Penalties would be the undoing of Dordt College in this match-up as the Blades gave up 3 power play goals in the first period and another in the third. Dordt's first penalty resulted in a power play goal by Zack Feher at the 14:33 mark of the first period. Shorthanded yet again, Dordt gave up a goal to Chad Ouellette with 10:15 on the clock. With 2:31 remaining in the opening session Dordt conceded their third straight power play goal, this one going to Sam Waldhart. Davenport's Brandon Madaj added a 4th marker for the Panthers with 1:30 left in the period to take a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. Dordt was outshot 15-6 in the opening period.
Although both teams took multiple penalties in the second period neither was able to find the back of the net and the Panthers kept their 4 goal cushion going into the second intermission. Both teams had 10 shots on goal over the 20 minute period.
In the the third period Davenport added yet another power play goal, just 18 seconds into the period, to go up 5-0 on Dordt College with the goal credited to Sam Waldhart, his second of the contest. On a power play of their own Dordt was able to tally a marker at 11:22 of the third period to negate the shut-out bid by Davenport netminder Matt Sekosan. Nate Woudstra had the Blades goal on a one timer with assists going to Gesink and Esselink.
The two teams combined for 67 penalty minutes and all but one of the 6 goals in the lopsided tilt came with the power play advantage.
Ted Gibbons had 31 saves in the loss for Dordt College while Matt Sekosan had 23 saves in the win for Davenport.
This was Dordt's 3rd straight trip to the ACHA D3 National Tournament and the trip was a little bit of a surprise after the squad lost numerous players to graduation after their 5th place finish in last year's national tournament.
