About the program
What is it? IDEAS (Investigating, Discovering, and Excelling in Academics and Service) is for highly motivated and talented high school students. The program provides students with four days of investigations, activities, projects, and hands-on explorations across a wide range of academic disciplines, all while being mentored by Dordt faculty. Our build-your-own-experience format allows students to choose a focused experience (all courses in one discipline), a multi-disciplined experience, or an experience somewhere in between.
When is it? Plan to arrive on Dordt's campus the morning of Monday, June 13, 2016. After checking into the dorms and receiving a brief orientation, you will be ready for four days of learning and fun. Beginning Monday afternoon, and running through Friday morning, you will participate in a variety of workshops, activities, and field trips. Interspersed throughout your day will be times of praise and worship, team-building activities, service opportunities, and other fun activities on and around Dordt's campus. You will depart at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 17.
This is your opportunity to build your own camp experience! There will be numerous course options, along with some service opportunities from which to choose. You will be asked to pick your top eight choices, and you will be placed in four classes or three classes and one service project (if you have indicated a desire to do a service project).
A limited number of full-registration scholarships will be available for students planning to attend at least one of the three math/stats course offerings, or one of the two computer science course offerings. See the course listings for scholarship application and registration instructions.
- FEMALE STUDENTS, a group under-represented in computer science and related disciplines, are especially encouraged to apply for the computer science scholarship.
- ANY STUDENT from groups under-represented in mathematics and related disciplines are especially encouraged to apply for the math/stats scholarship.
Who should participate? High school students who are freshmen, sophomores, or juniors during the 2015-16 school year are encouraged to apply. Be prepared to join a like-minded peer group and take to heart the motto "Work Hard. Play Hard." Students should plan to arrive on Dordt's campus the morning of Monday, June 13, and depart late afternoon on Friday, June 17.
Am I the kind of person you're looking for? We anticipate accepting a diverse set of students to the program. If you have a passion for learning, have done well in your courses, and are excited to spend a few days having fun and learning, then, yes!
When should I apply? Registration opens on March 1, 2016. Application deadline is May 25, 2016.
Transportation to and from IDEAS
Shuttle transportation will be provided to/from the Sioux City and Sioux Falls airports and the Sioux City bus station.
