A Concept that Blew My Mind
I had always known about the missional focus of the church, but while I was at Dordt I realized even more the importance of evangelism and missions. I think before I came to Dordt I thought of these concepts as big, daunting tasks, but while at Dordt I have realized more and more that these are things that God calls us to do, and he will give us the strength to do so.
Cool things I did at Dordt
As a student, I was able to do many cool things which will forever be a part of who I am. My freshman year I went on PLIA (Putting Love Into Action) to Cincinnati and it was one of the highlights of college for me. There is something unique about going on a trip with just students to serve over your spring break that just makes wonderful memories. I don't think I have ever met someone who said they didn't enjoy going on PLIA. I also was heavily involved in theater and choir at my time at Dordt, and being in the musical My Fair Lady my freshman year changed my life. I had just arrived at college, and being in this production helped me to make many friends that I still have. It was also a very, very fun show and I loved being able to be a part of it. Another cool thing that I will be doing next year as a student is studying abroad at Oxford. I am very excited to do this and have been looking forward to it since my freshman year of college.
Obstacles I’ve overcome
First semester of junior year was the first semester back after being sent home in March because of Covid-19. I was really questioning why God would allow this to happen, and many of my questions were focused on myself. After being quarantined twice and missing a concert and one of my play performances, I felt pretty beat. I felt as though I was fighting an uphill battle. But the Lord continued to work in me even when I tried to push him away and felt as though he wasn't there. While we are still living in Covid times, and I could be quarantined again, the Lord has provided me with more peace this semester and assurance of his presence. God is the one helping me to overcome.
Who I was when I came to Dordt
When I first arrived at Dordt, I was an excited freshman ready to meet everyone, go to lots of events, and become very involved in campus. I was absolutely thrilled to be on campus and start my "college experience" that I had heard so much about.
How Dordt Impacted me
Dordt's professors are a truly passionate, unique group of individuals that care deeply about their students and the material they are teaching. I have learned about so many different perspectives, especially in my field of psychology, that I didn't even know existed. The community of Dordt has also greatly impacted who I've become, or rather I should say, who I am becoming. People (students, faculty, etc.) truly love the Lord and want to grow with you while you are a student here. I have been pushed in my faith through the friendships that I've made and the classes that I have taken. Going to Dordt has made me a more open-minded, curious person.
Where I am now
Next, I would like to attend graduate school at some point. Whether that is right after I graduate or a few years down the road, I'm not sure. I would like to either work in the social services, at some sort of Christian organization, or become a therapist of some sort, such as a speech-therapist.
What i would tell prospective students
The college years are some of the most formative years of your life. Choose a college that will help shape you into the person God wants you to be.
How Dordt helped me Do More
Dordt has helped me to Do More by giving me numerous tools to live a life that reflects Christ. I feel better equipped to serve God in his kingdom, and I have learned so much about my field and about people that are different than me. Dordt encourages a community of people to strive to live life with intention.
