A Concept That Blew My Mind

Asking the deep questions. Instead of just asking "What are you doing?" digging deeper and asking "WHY are you doing that?" Dordt has taught me to explore deeper meanings and not just take things at surface level.

Cool Things I Did At Dordt

I worked both as a sports information assistant and a student assistant at KDCR, the on-campus radio station. I also wrote and edited for the Diamond, Dordt's student newspaper. My senior year, I was the president of the Communication Club and planned a spring trip to Minneapolis where we toured the Star Tribune and Target Field.

Obstacles I've Overcome

Being a transfer student presents its own set of challenges. Coming in as a junior, I knew no one here. Fortunately for me, everyone I encountered at Dordt was so open and welcoming! I am not particularly extroverted, but I made friends pretty quickly and now some of my best friends are from Dordt—not just students, but professors also. They never gave special treatment to students who had been here as freshmen. I was always treated fairly and was given the same opportunities as any other student. Everyone in this community made my transition go as smoothly as I could have hoped for.

Who I Was When I Came To Dordt

I transferred to Dordt for my last two years of college. With half of my college career completed, I was just ready to finish my degree and graduate. However, I enjoyed my time at Dordt way more than I thought I would.

How Dordt Impacted Me

I am much more open-minded and willing to listen to people who have differing backgrounds or beliefs than I do. Through my coursework in communication, the professors have taught me—and shown me through their own actions—how to be a Christian communicator. They've shown me the overarching principle that God must be honored in all communication and how to practice that in my own life.

Where i am now

I work full-time at Agency Two Twelve in Sioux Center as their account coordinator/social media specialist. (Updated 2/25/19)

What I Would Tell Prospective Students

Choosing a college is a daunting experience. Some of us don't get it right the first time and it takes an extra step. Coming to Dordt was no doubt the right decision for me and I do not regret that choice for one second. Consider what you're looking for in a college and compare that to what Dordt has to offer. Be confident in your decision and take full advantage of all the opportunities a college has to offer you.

How Dordt Helped Me Do More

Dordt has given me so many opportunities I wouldn't have had at my previous school. The fact that Dordt has KDCR was a big draw for me. As a communication student, having a radio station where I could learn real-world broadcasting skills was invaluable to me. Working with Dordt's Sports Information Director Mike Byker was also a fantastic learning experience. Through the career fair, I was also able to land an internship that ended up leading to a full-time job offer in my field.
