FAVORITE SPOT ON CAMPUS
The lower level of the Campus Center by the big windows, where praise and worship is held.
An advanced health assessment BSN class, where we learned new assessment skills and were able to practice them on our peers.
A CONCEPT THAT BLEW MY MIND
The powerful way in which God works to bring students together. It was mind-blowing to meet students from all over the country and world, who all grew up with very different backgrounds and experiences, and to realize that although we were different, we shared the same love for the Lord. Those moments praising God together as a Dordt community through chapel, GIFT, and praise and worship were so moving. You could feel the Holy Spirit at work.
COOL THINGS I DID AT DORDT
Some of my favorite things that I was able to do as a student included attending as many sporting activities as possible to cheer on my friends, spending lots of time at 55th, attending Praise and Worship every Thursday, eating at the Grille with my friends, going to concerts at the BJ Haan, going to GIFT on Sunday nights, running in the Goheen Gallup, participating in the “all campus slip ‘n slide”, attending campus block parties and wing events, and more. In terms of academic experiences, I was able to have clinical experiences in the NICU, pediatrics, ICU, clinics, ER, and many different inpatient experiences. I was also able to have a couple clinical experiences my BSN year, in which I was able to get experience with Home Health as well as an outpatient women's clinic for low socio-economic status patients.
OBSTACLES I'VE OVERCOME
During my time at Dordt, I had to overcome of the obstacles of getting through difficult nursing classes, such as microbiology and chemistry. I learned the importance of admitting when you need help. I was able to schedule time with a tutor through the Academic Enrichment Center (AEC) for two different classes, and I am so thankful that I did. With their help, I was able not just to pass those classes, but to do well in them.
WHO I WAS WHEN I CAME TO DORDT
I was very nervous and anxious about college. But I soon felt right at home, because the staff and professors were so friendly. I was prepared for all the knowledge about nursing I would gain while studying at Dordt; what I didn’t realize was how much I would learn about myself in the process. I did not realize all God had in store for me during those four years, and how different I would be at the end.
HOW DORDT IMPACTED ME
I really grew up in my time at college and learned the importance of being responsible for managing my time, and for learning to say “no” to hanging out with friends and "yes" to studying at the appropriate times. I also learned how to branch out and meet new people, and to participate in activities that would normally make me nervous. I was able to learn what I like and don't like, and the importance of making time for the things that I enjoy. I learned how to put my faith first, and I had to decide how I was going to make that a priority in my life. I also was able to develop some very deep life-long friendships with people who were raised differently than I was. We were able to pray together and encourage each other in our walk with the Lord, as well as through all the ups and downs that come with college. I am so thankful that Dordt brought us together.
WHERE I AM NOW
After graduating in 2016, I was able to get my dream job as a pediatric nurse at Children's Mercy Hospital in downtown Kansas City. I work on a floor in which we care for kids with diseases that require kidney and/or liver transplants, as well as kids receiving inpatient rehabilitation following car accidents, gunshot wounds, and other traumatic events.
WHAT I WOULD TELL PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
There are so many different ways to get involved at Dordt and so many activities to be a part of, so take advantage of that. Figure out the things that make you happy and do them. Also, learn how to manage your time and make sure you set aside time for studies. The years will fly by, so enjoy your time, but also remember that there is so much more of life to look forward to after college, so keep your goals for after college a priority as well.
HOW DORDT HELPED ME DO MORE
My experience at Dordt has allowed me to do more in my career than I ever expected at this point in my life. Dordt gave me work experience as an RN while I completed my BSN studies during senior year. That experience helped me to gain a coveted position in a children's hospital. Because of the strong education Dordt provided for me, I have had the opportunity to become a charge nurse on the floor that I work on, as well as to train new employees. Along with this, Dordt has taught me to treat each patient, co-worker, and person I encounter as an image-bearer of Christ, and to use all the gifts God has blessed me with for his glory. I received such a rich education and experience at Dordt, and I am excited to be in a position to be able to give back to others, for the glory of God and his kingdom.
