The Dordt University men's volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Viterbo (Wis.) this morning at the DeWitt Gym. Individual scores were 25-14, 25-16, 20-25, 25-20.
The Defenders move to 0-2 for the season; Viterbo improves to 2-0.
Brady Frost hit for double figures for the second consecutive match, leading the Defenders with 11 kills and six digs. Andres Guzman and Luke Nelson finished with eight and seven kills, respectively.
Viterbo controlled the first two sets in getting out to a 2-0 lead. Faced with a must win third set, the Defenders used an early 9-2 run to get out to a 10-5 lead. In front by just one (21-20), Dordt scored the final four points on a couple of blocks and one kill by Dylan Kooiman to force a fourth set.
Dordt fell behind early in set four and trailed by as many as 10 (17-7) before a rally trimmed the Viterbo lead to 21-19 following an attack by Levi Ewald. The V-Hawks earned a sideout after a Defender error and closed the match with a 4-1 run.
The Defenders hit 15% and totaled eight blocks to go with five aces.
Jacob Nonn led Viterbo with 12 kills and both Dane Kerkman and My Tang added nine. The V-Hawks hit 19% and had seven aces.
The Defenders begin conference play with a pair of road matches next weekend, beginning with Central Christian on Friday night, Jan. 28 and followed by an afternoon match against Kansas Wesleyan.
