Mount Marty def. Dordt 6-4

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defenders were unable to hold a 4-1 lead and lost a 6-4 marathon to the Mount Marty Lancers in game two of their doubleheader on Saturday in Sioux Center.

The Defenders allowed a solo homerun in the first inning but it was Dylan Stanley tying the game with a homerun in the fourth inning. Logan Cline put Dordt up 2-1 when he knocked a solo shot over the left field fence for his sixth homerun of the season in the fifth inning.

Chase Edwards added to the lead with a two-run shot later in the inning.

The lead held into the seventh when Mount Marty got a two-run homerun to get within 4-3. Leading by the run the Defenders surrendered a homerun by David Richardson to tie it. Dordt had a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth with runners at first and second and Brock Spade reached on a hit fielded by the shortstop near the outfield grass. Jae Kim attempted to score from second on the play but was cut down at the plate.

Dordt also got Aaron Eshelman on in the 11th inning but he was stranded at second after getting there with one out.

Mount Marty eventually scored two in the 12th and Dordt was retired for the 6-4 final.  

THE NUMBERS

Dordt had three hits each from Logan Cline and Chase Edwards.  Both scored a run and Cline had a run batted in and Edwards had two.

Both teams had 12 hits and Dordt was hindered by four errors.

Dordt used six pitchers with Nick Yeager going six and two-third innings with eight hits and two earned runs allowed and he struck out nine.

Willem Hoekstra pitched an inning and a third of scoreless baseball.

Mount Marty’s Heston Williams got the win in relief with five hits allowed in five innings and he struck out eight.

Dordt is 11-19 overall and 7-7 in the GPAC and Mount Marty is 25-9 overall and 10-4 in the league.

The teams will play another doubleheader on Monday, April 11 at 4:00.
