The Dordt University men's cross country team opened their 2021 season with a third place finish at the Augustana Twilight held tonight at the Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Competing in one of the largest meets of the season and one that featured several NCAA D-I and D-II teams, the Defenders totaled 123 points and were behind South Dakota State and Augustana in the team standings. Dordt finished ahead of a couple of D-I teams, Nebraska and South Dakota, and was one of two NAIA teams in the top 10.
Jacob Vander Plaats posted a top 15 finish, placing 15th out of 344 runners, with a 4-mile time of 20:14. A pack of four Defender runners followed close behind, led by Davis Tebben in 23rd place and a time of 20:33. Joe Anderson passed several runners over the final stretch to place 27th (20:35) and Thaniel Schroeder (32nd - 20:39) and Nicolas Veldhorst (34th - 20:42) were the next Dordt runners to finish.
Said Head Coach Nate Wolf, "The men started their season with an outstanding third place finish out of 31 teams. Jacob Vander Plaats led the men's team with a 15th place finish and was followed closely by a tight pack that included Davis Tebben, Joe Anderson, Thaniel Schroeder, and Nic Veldhorst. One thing we were looking for tonight was solid racing within a large field. I felt the men positioned well at the start and then moved well throughout the race to accomplish this. This meet will be great experience as we head in to the rest of the season."
