Briar Cliff def. Dordt 70-68


The Dordt Defenders lost a tightly contested Great Plains Athletic Conference game on Saturday night at the De Witt Gymnasium by a 70-68 score against the Briar Cliff Chargers.

The Defenders overcame a 10 point first half deficit and were within two points at halftime, trailing 35-33.

A Jackson Louscher basket to start the second half tied the game and Jacob Vis made a long three-point basket to tie the game again at 38-38. Dordt had momentum and led 45-39 after Luke Rankin’s layup with 16:08 remaining but could extend the lead no further. Briar Cliff regained the lead with a run of its own to go up 53-49 and the back and forth battled continued.

The Defenders recovered from the four point deficit and regained the lead at 56-55 after a Louscher three-point play.  Bryce Coppock later added a three-point basket and a pair of free throws for a 64-58 lead with 4:43 left in the game.  Briar Cliff’s Jaden Kleinhesselink capped an 8-0 run with a three-point shot at the 1:57 mark and Briar Cliff made it a two-possession game with a basket after a defensive stop with under a minute left.

Coppock made a pair of free throws with :43 left in the game Matthew Stillwell scored on a jumper for his final two points of a game high 21 points to extend the lead to 70-66.  Dordt again got within two at 70-68 with under 10 to play.  After a Dordt timeout the Chargers had to use up two timeouts trying to inbound and eventually turned it over on the Dordt sideline.  Dordt would get the ball in the lane but Briar Cliff was able to strip it free and Dordt didn’t get a shot off to tie the game as time expired.


Dordt was 24-58 from the field and 8-25 on three-point shots.  Briar Cliff was 26-48 and 7-18. Dordt converted 12-13 free throws to Briar Cliff’s 11-15. 

Dordt had a 33-28 rebounding edge and turned the ball over 10 times to Briar Cliff’s 12.

Jackson Louscher led Dordt with 16 points and six rebounds.

Bryce Coppock scored 15 with four rebounds. Luke Rankin had 13 points and four assists.

Cade Bleeker scored nine and Jacob Vis added seven with five rebounds.

Briar Cliff was topped by Matthew Stilwell’s 21 points and Kyle Boerhave added 15.

Briar Cliff improves to 9-2 in the GPAC and 13-6 overall.  Dordt is 13-7 overall and 5-6 in the league.


Dordt will host Midland on Saturday, January 22.
