  • William Penn def. Dordt 93-90 (overtime)

The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team lost a hard fought 93-90 decision in overtime to William Penn (Iowa) in non-conference basketball played at Governor’s State in suburban Chicago, Illinois.

Dordt trailed 48-41 at halftime and was still down 52-45 when Jacob Vis knocked down a couple free throws and Bryce Coppock followed with a three point shot.  A Trey Hinote three-point basket with 13:01 remaining in the game drew Dordt to within 54-53 and Luke Rankin gave Dordt its first lead of the second half with a lay-up to go up 55-54.  The Dordt lead grew to as many as 68-61 after another Vis basket but the Statesmen kept pecking away at the lead.

William Penn tied it at 70 and it was tied at 72, 74 and 76.  A jump shot by Luke Rankin made it 78-76 and William Penn made one of two free throws.  The Defenders secured the rebound on the miss and Bryce Coppock was fouled and made both free throws.   With time winding down William Penn’s Josh Watkins made a left corner three-point basket to send the game to overtime tied 80-80.

The back and forth tussle continued in the extra five minutes with neither leading by more than two until A three-point shot at the buzzer  for William Penn unlocked the 90-90 tie and gave the Statesman a 93-90 win.

Statistics for the contest were not accurate in game and will be re-tabulated over the weekend.

Unofficially Luke Rankin scored 30 in his Dordt debut while Coppock and Vis had 18 points each.

“The guys played with great composure all night. Newman hit big shots tonight—that’s what leaders and great players do.  I was proud of our effort and mental toughness. We never got rattled and passed it well with 24 assists.”

Dordt will face East-West (Illinois) on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
