A second-half rally came up short as Dordt University lost to NCAA D-II William Jewell (Mo.) 3-2 in a non-conference match played tonight at Greene Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the host Cardinals netted a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the second half for a commanding 3-0 lead.
Dordt broke through with its first goal during the 58th minute when Avril Baccam drove a ball past Cardinals goalkeeper Kaylie Kappelmann off an assist from Claire Jansen.
Down 3-1, Baccam scored again during the 83rd minute to put the Defenders down by just one, 3-2. Both teams had scoring chances during the dramatic final minutes.
Dordt totaled eight shots on-goal, led by Baccam with four. The freshman has scored four goals in two games this season.
Elianna Van Hulzen made eight saves in goal for the Defenders.
“Unfortunately, the first eight minutes of each half we came out flat and that ended up being the deciding factor," stated Head Coach Alex Durbin. "We had a couple chances in the first half but nothing that was extremely threatening. We really started to play well in the second half and had a phenomenal last 25 minutes of play. Our build up was good and our forwards were connecting well together.”
Kate Lawrence, Rylie May and Jayme Coon all scored one goal for William Jewll; Kappelmann registered six saves.
