Dordt University defeated Ottawa (Kan.) 3-2 in the 2021 season opener for both teams.
Jori Bronner netted the game-winner during the 52nd minute, scoring her first collegiate goal. Bronner received a pass from Ellie Stuart behind the Ottawa defense and blew it past Braves goalkeeper Anna Tropansky.
Said Dordt Head Coach Alex Durbin, "We responded well after conceding the second Ottawa goal. Ellie (Stuart) received the ball on the wing with time and space and then played a great ball to Jori, who beat the goalie 1-on-1 to neatly tuck the ball into the back of the net."
Avril Baccam scored two goals in her debut with the Defenders and gave her team a 2-1 lead at the half. Baccam finished off a perfectly executed corner kick from Sarah Miller during the 22nd minute to tie the score at one. Less then 10 minutes later, Baccam beat an Ottawa defender and scored her second goal from the left corner of the penalty area.
"Not many freshmen come in and score two goals in their debut. Avril was composed and made the most of her opportunities today." said Durbin.
By the Numbers:
- Dordt had the shots on-goal advantage, 10-3
- Baccam (5) and Bronner (3) were the leaders for Head Coach Durbin's squad
- Jenna Wright accumulated one save in her first career start in goal for the Defenders
- Jessenia Velez scored both goals for Ottawa
"Overall, there were glimpses of phenomenal play...when we play quick and find the simple combinations in the middle of the field, we can break down the defense and create good scoring opportunities," said Durbin.
