Dordt def. Warner 5-4
The Defenders got a walk-off homerun from Connor Hommes to take a 5-4 win from Warner in Florida on Tuesday afternoon.
Dordt got an early run in the bottom of the first when Logan Cline singled with one out and stole second and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice.
Warner had a three-run answer in the top of the second but Dordt got one back in the home half of the third. Cline again was the catalyst with a single and stolen base and advanced to third on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly from Nick Hamilton scored Cline.
The Defenders added two more in the fifth when Brock Spade delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded. Warner answered with one in the sixth inning and Dordt went scoreless in the home half of the sixth frame.
Payton Stockwell worked a scoreless seventh inning after coming on in relief in the sixth and set the stage for Hommes’s heroics.
Dordt had a 10-8 hits advantage with Cline, Edwards, Hommes and Parker Hamann each had two hits with Spade and Nick Hamilton getting one hit each. Hamann and Hommes had a double and homerun each for Dordt’s extra base hits.
Logan Horne started the game with five innings pitched and struck out two and was charged with four runs.
Stockwell recorded the last six outs after coming on in relief in the sixth inning and pitched no-hit ball.
COAC BACON SAID
“It is awesome to watch our group come together and get a big bounce back win. Our young men fought and multiple guys stepped up to make plays when we needed them. To cap it of with Connor having a great at-bat finishing with a homerun was special.”
