The Dordt Defender track and field team sent a limited number of entrants to the Concordia Early Bird Invite on Saturday, December 5.  Even with a limited number of entrants the Defenders managed several top-five finishes and a couple automatic qualifying standards for the NAIA National Championship.

Matthew Van Eps established a new meet record and ran a national championship automatic qualifying time of 1:52.64 in the 800 meters.  Trey Engen won the mile and was one of three Defneders in the top-5 of the event. The junior ran a meet record time of 4:20.18 in the event.

The 4x400 of Micah Brands, Payton Mauldin, Cole Zevenbergen and Van Eps claimed first and a berth in the national championship in 3:18.15 and Zevenbergen also met the automatic standard in the 600 meters with a time of 1:21.10.

Grant Brouwer, in his first heptathlon, finished fifth and scored 4,351 points while hitting the auto standard for the event.  His teammate, Josh de Jong also hit the auto standard in the loaded field and finished sixth with 4,269 points.
