Northwestern def. Dordt 76-69

Tonight's game was a close battle in which the largest lead was 10 points, but the Defenders' three-game winning streak came to an end at De Witt Gymnasium. Dordt jumped out to a 6-2 lead nearly two minutes in with an Ashtyn Veerbeek made shot in the paint, but Northwestern went on a 9-0 run to go up by five midway through the first quarter. The Defenders remained close, including a basket by Erika Feenstra in the closing seconds of the quarter to make the score 21-17.

Dordt took back the lead at 6:10 in the second quarter as Ashtyn Veerbeek capitalized on the second chance opportunity to give the Defenders a 29-28 lead. Dordt then went on to stretch their lead to as much as 8 points on free throws by Jordyn Winterfeld. Northwestern followed by using another run to even up the score at 36 before Veerbeek scored again to give Dordt a 38-36 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw both teams flip the lead, with neither team leading by more than three throughout the quarter. The lead changed hands three times in the quarter as neither team was able to gain an edge. Taylor VanderVelde scored two second chance points for the Red Raiders to give Northwestern a 53-51 lead going into the fourth.

Veerbeek and Beckman both scored for the Defenders to start the final quarter to give Dordt a 55-53 lead, and the Defenders maintained the lead until the 4:23 mark as Erika Feenstra's made basket was answered by two Northwestern free throws and a made three-pointer by Sammy Blum to give the visitors a 63-61 lead. Northwestern held the advantage throughout the rest of the contest and sealed the game with free throws in the final minute, as Dordt's late scoring chances were not enough to regain the lead.

Ashtyn Veerbeek scored 33 points and had 9 rebounds

Karly Gustafson had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds

Dordt shot 37.7% and Northwestern shot 41.7%

The Defenders outrebounded the Red Raiders 44-39

Dordt blocked 5 shots as a team

"We have to be more confident on the offensive end, take open shots, and get to the rim on hard closeouts. It was great to have Karly back today and also to have Bailey Beckman back with us today. We have to get to the point of giving our best effort consistently by everyone on the floor. We have to make sure we value our road opportunities, and we'll feel really good if we can get back to the .500 mark by Christmas break."

Dordt is now 5-6 and Northwestern is 5-6

Dordt will travel to Yankton, South Dakota to face Mount Marty in a 12:00 pm game on Saturday, December 19.
