Mount Marty def. Dordt 75-74


The Mount Marty Lancers won a dramatic 75-74 decision over Dordt in Great Plains Athletic Conference Quarterfinal round action at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa, Wednesday night in men’s play. The win was a reversal of two previous wins by the Defenders in the series.

Both teams struggled to a 15-15 tie with 9:52 left in the first half before Mount Marty went on a 13-1 run to lead 28-16 at the 5:57 mark after a Chris King basket. The Defenders were able to cut into the lead before the half ended and trailed 33-30 at the break.

The Defenders were able to take a six point lead twice in the second half at 50-44 and 52-46.  In both cases Marcus Winterfeld scored a two-point basket to extend the lead back to a half dozen. From the 11:00 mark to the 3:52 mark the visitors reversed fortune and led 70-64. 

A Jesse Jansma three-point basket cut the difference to 70-67 and Marcus Winterfeld got Dordt to within 70-69 with a basket on a putback of a missed shot. Dordt rebounded the ensuing Mount Marty miss and Jansma was fouled at the :55 mark and he made both free throws for a 71-70 lead.

Mount Marty’s answer was basket and free throw by Jordan Johnson for a 73-71 lead wit :34 left.  On the ensuing possession Jansma knocked down a straight on three-point basket for a 74-73 Dordt advantage.  After a timeout the Lancers worked the clock down and with :02 left Jonah Larson got free underneath to score the eventual game winner. Dordt had an inbounds play to go the length of the court but the pass was broken up and the Lancers survived for the one point win.


Dordt was 28-62 from the field and 5-19 from the arc with 13-17 free throw shooting.

Mount Marty was 29-63 from the field and 12-35 from the arc and converted 5-5 free throws.

Dordt had a 45-25 rebounding advantage but committed turnovers to five for the Lancers.

Zach Bussard scored 16 and had 11 rebounds—eight of them offensive.

Marcus Winterfeld and Garrett Franken each had 14 and Franken had nine rebounds and Winterfeld six.

Jesse Jansma scored 13 with two assists.

Mount Marty got 24 from Chris King, 23 from Colby Johnson and 16 by Jordan Johnson to account for 63 of their 75 points,

Dordt is 22-9 while Mount Marty is 20-11.

Dordt will await a potential at-large berth to the NAIA Division II National Basketball Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, beginning March 11. The 32-team field will be announced on March 4 at 5:00 pm.
