HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender volleyball team secured a 3-2 win over Mount Mercy on the road in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Thursday night, March 12.
The Defenders took an 11-6 lead in set one after a block by Garret Vander Zee and Luke Nelson. The Defenders maintained the lead the rest of the set and won a 25-15 decision.
The hosts came back in set two and led almost start to finish in securing a 25-15 win of their own.
The momentum swung back to the Defenders in set three. The teams battled to a 17-15 difference in the set with Dordt in front with Caleb Kulesza knocking down a kill and back to back attack errors by the Mustangs made it 20-15. The Defenders ended up winning the set 25-18 for a 2-1 match lead.
With momentum swings coming easily, the Defenders were on the short end of a 25-17 decision in set four, setting up a decisive set five.
Dordt was fighting from behind most of the fifth set and trailed 13-11. Kulesza got a kill to cut the difference to one and a Mount Mercy kill put the hosts at match point. An attack error tied the set and the score was tied again at 15, 16 and 17. Dordt took its first lead of the set on a Kulesza kill for an 18-17 lead and Tyler Postma ended the match with an ace serve.
Garret Vander Zee had 18 kills and eight digs with three block assists.
Kulesza recorded 14 kills with four service aces and 18 digs.
Adam Van Elburg put down nine kills and Tyler Postma had 40 assists.
Caleb Brandsma had 10 digs.
Dordt will face Clarke in Dubuque, Iowa on Friday afternoon, March 13.
