Dordt def. Dakota State 5-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders made it four wins in a row to start the softball season with a 5-3 win over Dakota State in a game played in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
The two teams were scoreless through four innings before Dordt plated three runs on three hits and took advantage of three Dakota State errors. Marissa Vanden Berg delivered a double to score the second run of the inning and later scored on an error. The first run came in when Chandler Schemper scored after a Haylee Heims single and errant throw by Dakota State.
Dakota State came back with two in the fifth but left two on base to leave the score 3-2. Vanden Berg delivered a single in the sixth that pushed Emma Veenstra and Janae Wynja across.
Dakota State got one back in the sixth inning on a solo homerun but couldn’t muster any more runs despite getting two more runners on in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Dordt was outhit 8-5.
Marissa Vanden Berg was 2-4 at the plate with single and double and a stolen base.
Chandler Schemper, Janae Wynja and Haylee Heims all had a single for the Defenders.
Natalie Fopma went the distance and allowed three runs on eight hits, two walks and she struck out one.
Dordt will play Dickinson State and Presentation on Saturday, February 15 to conclude the opening weekend of the softball season.
