Dordt def. Presentation 3-0
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders won a 3-0 decision over Presentation on Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen, South Dakota in the season opener for both teams.
Dordt took advantage of 14 hits to forge the shutout behind the pitching of Natalie Fopma.
Dordt got a run in the second when Hannah Sikkema homered to lead off the inning. Dordt eventually got two more runners on base but stranded the runners.
The teams were scoreless until the fifth inning when Dordt scored two more on four hits. Jessica Oules, Jessica Oules and Chandler Schemper started the inning with successive singles and Schemper’s single scored Oules. Vanden Berg was retired trying to steal third but Schemper took second and eventually scored on a Hailey Heeringa single to make the final 3-0 as neither team was able to push another run in.
Dordt did have the bases loaded in the seventh inning but left the three runners on base as the inning ended.
Presentation did get the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but a line out ended the game.
Dordt had a 14-8 hits advantage and neither team committed an error.
Heeringa had three singles with a run batted in.
Sikkema had a single and homerun with a run scored and Oules and Vanden Berg each had two singles.
Dordt’s Natalie Fopma was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts and one walk issued.
Dordt will play four games over the next two days in Aberdeen. On Friday the Defenders will face Valley City State and Dakota State at 10:00 and noon and will play Presentation and Dickinson State on Saturday.
