Dordt def. Valley City State 4-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders stunned Valley City State in the first game of the day in Aberdeen, South Dakota on Friday morning, February 14.
Dordt sidestepped trouble in the top of the first inning when a leadoff double was squandered by the Vikings. The Defenders came back with a single by Marissa Vanden Berg followed by Ella Koster reaching on an error. After fly out the Defenders got a three-run homerun by Hailey Heeringa to play from in front the rest of the game.
Hannah Sikkema delivered a run scoring single in the third inning to put the Defenders up 4-0.
Neither team mounted much of a threat until the seventh inning when a two-run homerun with two outs cut the lead to 4-2 but Abby Kraemer was able to coax a fly ball to rightfield for the final out of the game.
Dordt had an 8-7 hit advantage with eight different players recording a hit.
Abby Kraemer allowed two runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and she walked two for her second win of the season.
Dordt will play Dickinson State and Presentation on Saturday, February 15 to conclude the opening weekend of the softball season.
