Ottawa def. Dordt 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-21
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders lost a 3-0 decision the road to the Ottawa Braves in men’s volleyball Friday night in Ottawa, Kansas.
The contest counted to the league standings.
The Defenders lost the first set 25-19 and challenged in set two before falling 25-22. A four-point run in the first set established the tone and Dordt was never closer than three down the stretch, 21-18 before losing by six.
The Defenders had a 14-11 lead in set two after a Tyler Postma kill but the hosts turned the three-point deficit into an 18-15 lead with a 6-1 run and Dordt was able to get within two on two separate occasions before dropping the set. Brandon Vaags got the lead back to 24-22 with a kill but the Braves answered with a kill for the 25-22 win.
The Defenders rallied from four separate six point deficits to lock the score at 20-20 with Garret Vander Zee recorded three straight kills and Shavon Barker added a kill for the tie. Ottawa reestablished a lead with a block and Dordt never got closer than 23-21 before losing 25-21.
Ottawa had a 41-30 kills advantage along with a 3-1 ace serves edge.
Caleb Kulesza had 11 kills and Garret Vander Zee 10 to lead the Defenders.
Tyler Postma put up 16 assists and Levi Vroom had nine assists.
Levi Ewald got to seven digs and Shavon Barker and Kulesza each accounted for three block assists.
Dordt will face Park in Parkville, Missouri on Saturday, February 29.
