Briar Cliff def. Dordt 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s volleyball team battled nationally recognized Briar Cliff on Tuesday night, February 25 but lost a 3-0 decision to the Chargers.
The Defenders were never out of any of the sets but were unable to take a set to make it interesting. The Defenders trailed in set one 17-11 but charged back to within 19-17 with an attack error, back to back kills by Brandon Vaags and Garret Vander Zee and a block by Tyler Postma. The two-point deficit is as close as the Defenders got in the set and lost 25-20.
Set two featured ten ties with the final deadlock coming at 17-17 after a service error by the Chargers. A 3-0 run by the Chargers put them in control 20-17. Dordt rallied to within 21-20 on a Lucas Nelson block but the Chargers answered with a kill and then scored the next three points for another 25-20 win.
The Defenders again battled in set three but lost some ground near the midpoint of the set and got behind 17-13 as the Chargers went on a 6-2 run. Dordt got as close as 18-16 later in the set but no closer and fell 25-21.
Briar Cliff had a 39-29 kills advantage and recorded 10 points on blocks to Dordt’s nine.
Both teams had two ace serves.
Caleb Kulesza had 10 kills and Vander Zee had nine. Kulesza and Brandon Vaags each had eight digs.
Tyler Postma recorded 23 assists and had two solo blocks.
Luke Nelson had two solo and two assisted blocks and Levi Ewald had a team high 10 digs.
Dordt is now 0-4 in the league and 4-6 overall.
Dordt will face Ottawa on Friday night and Park on Saturday. Dordt’s next home match is March 7 against Lincoln (Illinois).
