Briar Cliff def. Dordt 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-17)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Briar Cliff Chargers moved to 2-0 in conference play as they beat the Dordt Defenders in volleyball action in Sioux City, Iowa, Tuesday night, February 4. The Defenders were playing in their season opener.
Dordt trailed in set one 14-4 and were never able to get closer than seven in falling 25-15. Dordt did grab an early lead in set two and led 7-6 before Briar Cliff put together a four point run to take the lead for good. The lead grew to 18-11 before Dordt rallied, using a five point run late in the set to get within 24-22. Two attack errors by the Defenders started the comeback and a Shavon Barker kill made it three in a row.
Garret Vander Zee added a kill and another Briar Cliff attack error is what got it to 24-22 but the Chargers got the game winner on a service error to secure the three-point win.
Set three featured seven ties up to 8-8 but the Chargers pulled away, scoring four out of five points for a 15-11 lead. Dordt got to within 19-15 but the Chargers closed with six out of eight points for a 25-17 win.
Dordt hit for a .131 kill efficiency and scored four points on blocks with one service ace.
Briar Cliff hit .305 and had three aces and 10 points on blocks.
Garret Vander Zee had 12 kills and nine digs.
Tyler Postma put up 22 assists and seven digs and Levi Ewald led the Defenders with 10 digs.
Dordt is now 2-4 and 0-1 in the conference while Briar Cliff is now 4-2 and 2-0.
Dordt will resume play next Wednesday, February 12 when the Defenders host Morningside.
