HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender volleyball team lost a hotly contested match with William Penn on Friday night in Sioux Center.
The Defenders held on to win set one 27-25 after the score was tied 14 times up to 25-25. A service ace by Caleb Brandsma provided the game winner after Caleb Kulesza recorded a kill to unlock the tie.
William Penn got out to a 21-17 lead in set two but Dordt rattled off four points in a row to tie the set with Garret Vander Zee getting an ace to cap the run. The score was tied at 22, 23 and 24 but William Penn evened the match with two unanswered, capitalizing on a block and a kill for the two points.
After an attack error by William Penn and service ace by Caleb Brandsma the Defenders had an 18-16 lead in set three. The visitors struck for six straight and a 22-18 lead. Dordt tied the score at 24-24 but never took the lead and fell 28-26.
The Statesmen were in control of set four and never trailed after taking an 8-7 lead and won it 25-20.
Dordt was led in kills by Garret Vander Zee with 19 and Caleb Kulesza added ten.
Shavon Barker had seven kills.
Tyler Postma had 35 assists and ten digs.
Kulesza had three service aces and nine digs and Levi Ewald had 11 digs.
Caleb Brandsma had three aces and Shavon Barker had three solo and five assisted blocks.
William Penn had a 46-42 kill advantage.
Both teams had 11 blocks.
Dordt had an 8-3 service advantage. Both teams struggled with service errors with 16 by Dordt and 13 by William Penn.
Dordt is now 2-1 while William Penn is 1-1.
Dordt will host three matches on Saturday. The Defenders face Jamestown at 11:00 AM and Viterbo at 3:00 PM. Viterbo and Jamestown will play at 1:00 PM.
