Dordt defeats Dakota Wesleyan 4-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender baseball team made it a split of games on Saturday with a 4-3 win over Dakota Wesleyan in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday.
The Defenders scored a run in the first inning with Tyce Marquez leading off the inning with a single and he eventually scored on a Steve Tiersma sacrifice fly.
Dakota Wesleyan came back with a run in the second and two more in the fourth inning for a 3-1 lead.
After two scoreless frames the Defenders got two in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Marquez and Alex Chavez reached on a fielder’s choice and base on balls with one out in the seventh inning.. A two-base throwing error by the pitcher allowed Marquez to score from first and Cam Pfafman knocked in Chavez with a sacrifice fly.
Dordt took the lead in the eighth as Lucas Nelson came around to score after reaching on a walk and he eventually scored on a Marquez single.
Wesleyan had runners at first and third in the eighth inning but a strikeout ended the inning. Wesleyan also had a runner caught stealing and another thrown out at second. The Tigers also had the tying run on second and the go-ahead run at first in the ninth inning but a pop out to second base ended the frame and the game.
Dordt had a 7-6 hits advantage led by Marquez’s two singles.
Marquez scored two runs and had a run batted in.
Logan Cline, Lucas Nelson, David Laurenti, Andrew Pullar and Austin Pullar all had singles.
Aiden Urbom pitched 3 and a third innings and was charged with three runs on two hits and four walks.
Willem Hoekstra came on in relief and pitched five and a third to earn the win while allowing no runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Dordt is 3-9 this season.
Dordt will face Dakota State in a doubleheader on Monday night, March 9.
