Recap

The Dordt Defender track and field teams challenged for conference titles at the GPAC Championships on Saturday, February 22 at Mitchell, South Dakota.  The men battled conference power Doane down to the wire and finished runner-up by four points to the Tigers while the women matched their back to back third place finishes from 2017 and 2018.  The runner-up finish is the best ever by the men since the formation of the GPAC for the 2000-01 school year.

Jacob Vander Plaats was named the Men’s GPAC Meet Outstanding performer, accounting for 30 points with wins in the 1,000, mile and 3,000 meters.

Matthew Van Eps had an equally challenging day, winning the 600 and 800 meters and running a leg on the 4x800 meter relay team that won the event.  Van Eps also ran the lead leg of the 4x400 relay that entered the event two points out of first place.

Dordt’s strength was in the middle distance where the Defender men accounted for 17 place winners in the 800, 1000, mile and 3000 meters. Eric Steiger won the 5000 meters and was third in the 3000 meters. Trey Engen was runner-up in the 1000 meters and mile.

The women’s team won the 4x800 and finished second in the 4x400.

Individual champions included Anmarie Stuit in the 600 and Sarah Wensink claimed first in the mile and second in the 1000 meters.

Emma Bakker claimed a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200 and 400 and ran on the 4x400 team along with Stuit, Bailey Nelson and Mika Kooistra.

Dordt competitors who earned points at the GPAC Championship are considered all-GPAC and are listed below.  Next action for the Defenders will be March 5-7 at the NAIA National Championship in Brookings, South Dakota.
