HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt University hockey team scored three unanswered goals to defeat Creighton 5-4 on Friday. The win improved Dordt to 4-7 on the year.
Owen Metric scored the first goal of the game three minutes into the opening period to make it 1-0 in favor of Creighton. Caleb Koomans responded with a goal three minutes later to tie the game at one.
Both teams had numerous chances over the next 14 minutes and Metric broke the deadlock with three seconds left to make it 2-1 Jays heading into the second.
Dylan Hewitt made it 3-1 for Creighton early in the second period. Dordt hung around and Collin O'Brien scored with seven minutes to go in the second to cut Dordt's deficit to one. Mason Carstens put the Jays up 4-2 late in the second period after finishing a Matt Koucerek assist.
Wilhelm Oppedyk made it 4-3 on a power play goal with two minutes to go in the second.
The first 14 minutes of the third went by without any goals, but a power play with six minutes to play gave Logan Visser the opportunity to tie things at four. Two minutes later, Jaren Brue made it 5-4 and sealed the Dordt victory.
David Burns had 35 saves in the win.
Five different players scored for the Defenders.
Dordt had two power play goals in the game.
Charlie Miller had 38 saves in the win.
The loss dropped Creighton to 1-9-1.
Dordt and Creighton will face off again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Sioux Center.
