Recap

THE MEET

Dordt hosted the Herb Blakely Invite at Dordt University on Saturday morning, September 14 in Sioux Center, Iowa.  Dordt’s women prevailed while accumulating just 18 points in the first action of the year for the Defenders.  The meet was moved to Sioux Center after Madison, South Dakota, the scheduled site of the invite sustained significant damage to the course earlier this week with severe storms moving through the area.

The course was soft due to rain early in the day and 64 runners made up the field with seven teams represented.

Olivia Couch won the race for Dordt with a 19:34 time over the 5,000 meter course and Sara Wensink was right behind with a time of 20:00. Sienna De Jong made it a sweep for the Defenders of the first three spots with a time of 20:18.

Dakota State finished second in the team race with 83 points.

COACH WOLF SAID

“Our women moved very well over the last half of the race to put themselves in a great position as they crossed the finish line.  Olivia Couch won her first race as she crossed the line as the individual champion winning by 26 seconds over teammate Sarah Wensink who was second.  The ladies did a good job of getting 5 across the line in 75 seconds of each other.  We feel the ladies have the potential of running 10 within 75 seconds of each other as the team continues to gain experience and some younger runners learn the college race.  We look forward to training the next few weeks as we prepare for our next meet at Doane University on Sept. 28.
