Dordt def. Mount Marty 92-86

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team won its third game in a row with a 92-86 road win over the Mount Marty Lancers at the Laddie E. Cimpl Arena in Yankton, South Dakota.  The win was Dordt’s fourth in a row and seventh out of eight decisions since January 22.

Mount Marty started fast and had a 22-14 lead after a Colby Johnson free throw with 11:07 left in the first half. Garrett Franken knocked down a three-point basket for Dordt and Mount Marty countered with a two.  Marcus Winterfeld had a three to get Dordt to within 24-20 and Winterfeld converted another triple after a defensive stop to get within 24-23.

Chandler Brunsting made it a 9-0 run with a fast break basket and Dordt eventually led 37-31 when Josh Van Lingen converted a shot in the paint with 4:02 left in the half.

The breathing room evaporated with the Lancers taking a one point lead on free throws.  Dordt managed to regain the lead on a runner by Jesse Jansma off the backboard as time expired for a 46-45 halftime lead.

Mount Marty started the second half with back to back baskets and led 50-46 and still led by five with three minutes gone in the second half. Over the next ten minutes neither team would lead by more than six.

Jesse Jansma converted a three-point basket for Dordt with 5:23 left in the game as Dordt regained the lead at 77-75 and Dordt never relinquished the lead the rest of the game.

Winterfeld converted a shot in the paint for an 87-81 lead but Mount Marty scored on back to back possessions to get within 87-86. Chad Barkema was fouled on a putback attempt with :50 left and he made one of two free throws. After a miss by Mount Marty Dordt got two free throws by Franken for a 90-86 lead with :23 left. Mount Marty could have cut the lead in half with free throws on the next possession but missed the front end of a one and one.

Dordt secured the rebound and Jansma converted two free throws to ice the game for Dordt with :15 left and Mount Marty failed to convert on a pair of field goal attempts as time ran out.

THE NUMBERS

Dordt was 32-56 from the field for 57 percent success and made 9-22 three-point shots with 19-24 success from the free throw line.

Mount Marty was 27-54 from the field and 15-30 from the three-point line both for 50 percent.  The Lancers converted 17-21 free throws.

Marcus Winterfeld led Dordt with 18 points on 7-9 field goal shooting and he had four rebounds.

Jesse Jansma scored 15 on 6-11 shooting and he had three assists.

Zach Bussard had 14 points and eight rebounds.   Franken had 13 points an four rebounds and Van Lingen scored 12 on 5-6 shooting and 2-3 success from the three-point line.

Ben Gesink handed out four assists.

The two teams had 15 turnovers combined with Dordt having eight and Mount Marty seven.

Mount Marty’s Jordan Johnson had 22 points, five rebounds and eight assists.

Dordt is 22-8 this season and finish the GPAC year 13-7.  Mount Marty is 19-10 overall and 10-9 in league play.
