Dordt def. Hastings 89-66


The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team used a stifling defense in the second half that propelled the hosts to an 89-66 win over the visiting Hastings College Broncos on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center.

The Defenders never trailed in the first half, getting out to a 35-24 lead with 5:20 left in the first half before seeing Hastings creep back into the game to within 43-40 at halftime.  Hastings did get the lead down to one on a couple occasions in the first half.

A basket by Zach Bussard started the second half scoring and the lead quickly ballooned to 52-45 on a Jesse Jansma three-point shot with 18:21 left in the game. The difference was still just two at 58-56 with 13:48 left in the game when Josh Van Lingen hit a three and Ben Gesink and Chandler Brunsting followed with a two and a three respectively for a 66-56 lead with 11:41 left in the game. The Broncos never recovered as Dordt closed the game on a 31-10 advantage over the final 13:48.


Dordt had a 40-27 rebounding edge and converted 34-63 field goals and 14-27 three-point shots.

Hastings was 23-58 from the field and 10-26 from the arc.

Jesse Jansma scored 28 and was 10-14 from the field and 4-5 on three-point shots with two assists and two steals.

Garrett Franken scored 16 and had eight rebounds with three steals.   Franken was 4-4 on three-point shots.

Zach Bussard was 7-10 from the field and had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Ben Gesink and Cade Bleeker had nine and eight points respectively and Chandler Brunsting added six with four rebounds.
