Dordt def. Briar Cliff 92-86
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team overcame a late six point deficit to defeat Briar Cliff at the Newman Flanagan Center 92-86 in GPAC play Wednesday night.
Dordt started quickly and used a strong first half defensive performance to lead 45-31.
A Cade Bleeker basket to start the second half gave Dordt a 47-31 advantage and Josh Van Lingen’s basket answered a Briar Cliff bucket to keep the difference at 16.
Dordt’s lead was still 15 at 50-35 when the Chargers rallied. Using the hot shooting of senior Jackson Lamb the hosts cut into the lead and tied the game at 58-58 on a Lamb three-point basket with 10:36 remaining and the Chargers took their first lead of the second half on a pair of Lamb free throws.
The Briar Cliff momentum continued and the Chargers appeared poised to take control of the game at 68-62 with 8:31 left in the game.
A Garrett Franken basket cut the lead to 68-64 and Franken followed with a pair of free throws. Marcus Winterfeld tied it after a Briar Cliff turnover with a basket and he completed the three-point play for a 69-68 lead with 7:19 to go.
After Dordt got up 76-72 Briar Cliff inched back to tie the game at 79-79 and three straight Briar Cliff free throws made it 82-79. With 2:02 left in the game. Chandler Brunsting tied the game with a three-point shot on the next possession and Briar Cliff answered with two points. Another Brunsting three-point bucket put Dordt up 85-84 and a pair of Franken free throws put Dordt up for good 87-76 with :37 left in the game. Dordt got a stop on the other end and Marcus Winterfeld iced the game with four straight free throws sandwiched around another Dordt stop and was a six-point winner.
Franken led Dordt with 30 points, getting 21 in the first half and grabbed eight rebounds with two assists. The 30 points is a career high.
Marcus Winterfeld scored 16 with Chandler Brunsting and Ben Gesink getting nine and eight respectively. Winterfeld scored his 1000th point for the Defenders.
Zach Bussard had eight points along with Josh Van Lingen.
Dordt was 30-66 from the field and 11-27 from the arc while converting 21-25 free throws.
Briar Cliff was 31-69 from the field and 10-29 from the three-point arc while making 14-18 free throws.
Briar Cliff’s Jackson Lamb had a game high 33 points and scored 30 in the second half.
Dordt had a 41-38 rebounding edge and committed 11 turnovers to 10 for the Chargers. Dordt had five steals.
Dordt is 20-8 overall and 11-7 in the league while Briar Cliff is 14-14 and 5-13.
Dordt will host Hastings on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center in a 4:00 start.
