Dordt def. Concordia 86-76
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team made it a season split with the Concordia Bulldogs in their home and away series in GPAC play. The 86-76 win came in Sioux Center and was the 19th of the season for Dordt.
The Defenders played from behind much of the first half, grabbing brief leads at 27-26 on a Chandler Brunsting three-point shot, a 31-30 lead on Brunsting free throws and 34-33 on another Brunsting triple. Dordt had to settle for a 39-38 deficit at halftime and Concordia’s biggest lead of the first half was five.
Concordia as able to build a 54-50 lead with 13:13 left in the game before Brunsting converted a field goal. Jesse Jansma dropped in a pull-up, free-throw line jumper to tie it and Marcus Winterfeld had a dunk and free throw for an old-fashioned three-point play to give Dordt a 57-54 lead with 12:03 left in the game.
Dordt never trailed again and the Defenders converted 16-19 free throws in the second half to help preserve the win including Josh Van Lingen going 6-6 to help get the lead to 75-64. Concordia never got closer than five the rest of the game in falling 86-76.
Dordt was 28-59 from the field for 48 percent and the Defenders converted 9-21 three-point shots.
Concordia was 30-64 from the field for 47 percent and 13-31 from the arch for 42 percent.
Dordt converted 21-26 free throws while Concordia was 3-6.
Dordt had a 37-31 rebounding edge and turned the ball over 10 times to Concordia’s 14.
Marcus Winterfeld came off the bench to score a season high 21 points to go with seven rebounds. Winterfeld was 5-6 from the field and 8-9 on free throws.
Josh Van Lingen had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Garrett Franken scored 13 with nine in the second half and had six rebounds. Zach Bussard had 11 points and six rebounds.
Dordt is now 19-8 and 10-7 in the conference. Concordia slips to 17-9 overall and 8-8 in the league.
Dordt will travel to Briar Cliff on Wednesday, February 12.
