Northwestern def. Dordt 89-82 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team lost an 89-82 decision to Northwestern in Great Plains Athletic Conference action at the Bultman Center on Northwestern’s campus in Orange City.

The Defenders had things rolling early in the game with a 35-20 advantage after a basket by Ben Gesink with 8:42 left in the half.  Northwestern roared back using a 10-0 run to get within 39-37 with 5:07 left in the half and took as much as a 45-40 lead before a Ben Gesink three-point basket cut the difference to 45-43 at halftime.

The teams were tied early in the second half twice but Dordt was unable to take the lead until the 12:22 mark when Cade Bleeker knocked down a three-point shot.

The lead was short lived as Northwestern answered with a three almost immediately and Dordt’s last lead came at 63-62 on a pair of Marcus Winterfeld free throws with 11:53 left in the game.

The lead expanded to seven and was 76-69 with 5:07 remaining when Ben Gesink knocked down back to back three-point baskets nearly one minute apart. After a Trent Hilbrands basket for Northwestern Bleeker scored a pair of free throws to again get the lead down to one with 2:13 left.

Northwestern got a three-point basket on the ensuing possession and Dordt was never closer than four the rest of the game in falling 89-82.

THE NUMBERS

Dordt was 29-68 from the field and 13-35 from the arc for 43 and 37 percent respectively.

Northwestern was 33-64 from the field for 52 percent and 15-29 from the arc for 52 percent as well.

Northwestern had a slight 38-37 rebounding edge and Northwestern had six turnovers and Dordt five.

Ben Gesink led Dordt with 16 points and converted four three-point shots.

Cade Bleeker added 14 points and six rebounds. Garrett Franken scored 15 and had nine rebounds.

Marcus Winterfeld scored ten with Chandler Brunsting adding nine with six rebounds.

Northwestern was paced by Trenton Hilbrands and Isaac Heyer with 18 points each.

Dordt is 9-7 in the league and 18-8 overall. Northwestern is 9-6 in the conference and 17-8 overall.
