Dordt def. Doane 75-69
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team took the season sweep of the Doane Tigers on Saturday afternoon in Crete, Nebraska with a 75-69 win over the Tigers.
The Defenders led all but the opening moments of the contest and had a double digit lead in the second half but had to fight off a late charge by the hosts for their eighth win of the GPAC season.
The Defenders were up 23-20 when Ben Gesink scored a fast break basket and Cade Bleeker added a lay up off an assist by Dustin Marra after a steal. Bleeker added a free throw for the three-point play and the lead was 28-20. Another three-point play late in the half by Jesse Jansma had the Defenders up 39-28 and the teams traded baskets for a 41-30 Dordt lead. The lead would have been double digits if not for Anthony Laravie’s three-point basket under heavy duress at the buzzer for a 41-33 difference.
Doane scored the first four points of the second half to get the difference down to 41-37 but Ben Gesink and Jansma converted back to back three-point shots and Dordt’s lead eventually got to 15 points. Dordt had a couple chances to extend the lead but the Tigers were able to hang around and forced some turnovers.
The lead was still 10 after a Marcus Winterfeld putback of a missed shot 63-53 with 3:56 remaining in the game but the Tigers to got with 63-58 just a minute later. The Tigers never got to within a one possession game and the Defenders converted free throws down the stretch to seal the win with Winterfeld going 8-10 on free throws to help preserve the victory.
