Morningside def. Dordt 88-81

The Dordt Defenders lost an 88-81 GPAC game on Saturday night in Sioux Center to the top-rated Morningside Mustangs. The Mustangs used an 11-4 run near the midpoint of the second half to take control of a tight contest.

Dordt led early and pushed themselves to a 28-20 lead with 10:16 left in the first half on a Chandler Brunsting four-point play. The visitors battled back to take a 37-36 lead with 4:17 left in the half and the lead later became four points with Dordt fighting to back to tie it 42-42 on a Garrett Franken shot in the lane right before the buzzer.

The teams traded baskets up to 52-50 when Dordt led on a Zach Bussard field goal. Morningside’s Ben Hoskins converted a three-point basket that ignited a nine-point run that ended at the 12:09 mark. Dordt rallied to within three on three different occasions and trailed 69-66 before eight points in a row effectively put the game out of reach and Morningside held on to win 88-81 as Dordt closed the gap to six one time.

Dordt was 30-62 from the field and 9-28 from the three-point line while converting 12-17 free throws.

Morningside countered with 28-61 field goal shooting and 12-30 three-point success while making 20-24 free throws.

Dordt had a 36-34 rebounding edge but committed 12 turnovers to seven for the visitors.

Garrett Franken led all players with 24 points and eight rebounds.

Ben Gesink added 13 points and Zach Bussard had 12. Marcus Winterfeld came off the bench to score nine and Chandler Brunsting chipped in with eight.
