Dakota Wesleyan defeats Dordt  71-70


The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team lost a 71-70 road decision to Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night in Mitchell, South Dakota.

The Tigers took their first lead of the game at 8-5 and never trailed the rest of the half, building as much as a 33-21 lead before going into the intermission at 41-37. A Chandler Brunsting three-point basket closed the first half scoring.

Dordt rallied to tie the game at 48-48 on a Marcus Winterfeld three-point shot and it was tied again at 54-54. Wesleyan’s Jeffrey Schuch converted a free throw unlock the tie but Brunsting answered with a three-point shot to give Dordt its first lead since the opening minutes and the senior guard knocked down another three with 9:12 left for a 60-55 Dordt lead.

Wesleyan rallied for a lead at 65-64 but back to back baskets by Chad Barkema and Garrett Franken pushed Dordt ahead 68-65. The lead was short lived with back to back Wesleyan baskets for a 69-68 lead with 3:09 left. A pair of free throws by Wesleyan’s Sam McCloud put them up 71-68 and Dordt followed with three consecutive looks to tie the game with three-point shots but didn’t make any of them. Dordt eventually got to the free throw line with :27 left and Jesse Jansma made both ends of the one and one.

Wesleyan missed the front end of a one and one moments later and Dordt had the ball with :22 left. The Defenders ran their offense and didn’t get a shot and were forced to call timeout. After another timeout when they couldn’t get it in, Dordt inbounded to Franke near the three-point circle and his 18 footer was off the mark allowing Wesleyan to escape with the win.


Both teams shot the ball well with Dordt converting 29-56 overall and 5-17 from the arc with 7-7 free throw success.

Wesleyan made 27-55 field goals and 9-24 three-point shots.  Wesleyan was 8-12 from the free throw line.

Dordt had a 26-25 rebounding edge.

Franken and Brunsting led Dordt with 13 points each and Jesse Jansma and Chad Barkema each had 10 points.

Franken had a team high eight rebounds and Barkema had four assists with two steals. Zach Bussard came off the bench to score eight points.

Wesleyan was led by Sam McCloud’s 25 points.

Dordt is 15-6 overall and 6-5 in the GPAC.

Wesleyan is 16-3 overall and 8-2 in the league.


Dordt will host Morningside on Saturday evening at 6:00.
