Dordt def. UC-Merced 70-59
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team used a stifling defense in the final ten minutes of its game with the UC-Merced Bobcats to secure a 70-59 win on the road Saturday night, December 21 in non-conference basketball play.
The first half was a back and forth affair with each team leading by as many as four points and UC-Merced took a 35-31 lead into the break. Dordt struggled from the floor in the first half with an 11-33 half from the field and UC-Merced was 13-29 for 45 percent. Dordt was also outrebounded 20-18 in the first half of play.
Dordt scored to start the half on a Chad Barkema basket but UC-Merced answered with a three-point bucket to seize its biggest lead of the game. Jesse Jansma converted his first field goal of the game, a three-point shot to get within 38-36 and a Cade Bleeker three, his third of the game, put Dordt up 41-40 with 14:35 remaining in the game.
The game was still hanging very much in the balance at 48-48 with 11:13 left in the game. Chandler Brunsting got a steal and basket to put Dordt up 50-48 and an intentional foul was called on the play against the Bobcats. On the ensuing possession Marcus Winterfeld buried a three-point basket and the Defenders rolled off 14 points in a row before a free throw with 6:21 left in the game stopped the run.
UC-Merced was never able to seriously dent the lead which grew to as many as 69-52 with 1:53 remaining before Dordt settled for the 70-59 win.
Dordt was 16-34 in the second half from the floor and ended the game 27-67 for 40 percent success.
UC-Merced was 21-55 from the field and converted just 3-14 three-point shots in the second half after making 5-9 in the first half.
Dordt ended the game with a 44-35 rebounding advantage.
Chad Barkema led Dordt with 13 points and eight rebounds and four assists.
Jesse Jansma scored 12, all in the second half and had a team high five assists with six rebounds.
Garrett Franken had 12 points and seven rebounds with four assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
Cade Bleeker ended with 11 points and six rebounds.
UC-Merced was led by Mason Westlake’s 15 points.
Dordt is now 12-4 overall and UC-Merced is 7-3.
Dordt will be off until Thursday, January 2 when the Defenders host Doane in women’s and men’s basketball play.
