Dordt def. Hastings 70-68
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team survived a 70-68 road decision over the Hastings Broncos on Saturday afternoon in GPAC play.
The first half was a back and forth affair before Dordt scored eight in a row to get in front 31-22. Josh Van Lingen scored all eight points in the run and had 13 in the half. The lead for Dordt wouldn’t last as Hastings cut away at the advantage and got it down to 38-34 at the end of the half.
Hastings took control of the second half with a 7-0 run that ended when Jesse Jansma hit a pull up jumper at the 14:09 mark to get the lead down to 43-40. Hastings was able to get the lead up to six near the ten minute mark of the half at 49-43. The Defenders were able to rally and got to within 55-54 with 8:02 remaining on a Ben Gesink three-point basket.
The visitors eventually took the lead on a Chad Barkema basket and two free throws by Barkema seemed to put Dordt on its way by getting up 58-55.
Hastings had an answer and tied the game on a three-point basket and the Broncos were in control with 3:21 left in the game and leading 66-62.
A Garrett Franken basket got Dordt to within two and a three-point shot missed on the Hastings end. Jesse Jansma was able to get to the rim to tie the game with 1:20 left and after another missed three-point shot Jansma got into the paint again and finished for a 68-66 lead.
Another Hastings turnover with :25 left put Dordt in the driver’s seat and Jansma made two free throws after getting fouled. Trailing 70-66, Hastings was able to draw a foul and converted both free throws.
Leading 70-68 Dordt was fouled with :11 left in the game but missed the front end of the one and one. Hastings raced the length of the floor and settled for a three-point shot from 25 feet by Bart Hiscock and it was short, giving Dordt the two-point win.
Dordt converted 26-62 field goals and 9-25 three-point shots and 9-14 free throws.
Hastings made 26-66 field goals and just 5-27 three-point baskets with 11-17 free throws.
Dordt had a 41-34 rebounding edge and committed 16 turnovers while Hastings had nine.
Van Lingen and Gesink each had 13 points.
Cade Bleeker had 12 points and five rebounds while Jesse Jansma and Garrett Franken each had 10 points.
Jansma and Chad Barkema each had seven rebounds and Jansma had three assists.
Hastings got a career high 22 points from Brendan Lipovsky.
Dordt is now 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Hastings is 6-6 and 1-5.
Dordt will travel to face Pacific Union on Thursday and Cal Merced on Saturday in California. Dordt resumes GPAC play on Thursday, January 2 against Doane in Sioux Center, Iowa.
