Dordt def. Midland 96-87

The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team used a rally in the final seven minutes and took a nine-point win from the Midland Warriors in a game played in Sioux Center.

A Garrett Franken three-point play put Dordt up 8-3 early in the game but the Midland Warriors rebounded and controlled the next five minutes and took a 23-15 lead on a Kylan Smallwood three-point basket with 13:10 left in the half.

Dordt was able to slow Midland and Chad Barkema made a pair of free throws with just under three minutes left in the half to put Dordt up 36-32. Midland proceeded to outscore Dordt 6-1 over the final minutes of the half and led 38-37 at the break.

The game was tied for the 13th time at 46-46 before the Defenders seemed to assert control and went up 60-53 on a Jesse Jansma three-point basket with 14:06 left in the game.  Midland regrouped and tied the game at 61 and again at 63.  From there the Warriors scored 14 of the next 19 points and led 77-68 with 6:11 left in the game.

Back to back Jansma baskets, a two  and a three, started the charge and Garrett Franken converted a left corner three-point basket for a 77-76 deficit. A pair of Midland free throws slowed the rally just a bit but Jansma answered with a pair of free throws and after a missed three-point basket by Midland Franken converted another three-point basket for Dordt’s first lead in over ten minutes 81-79.

Jesse Jansma made a couple free throws to put Dordt up by two-possessions and Josh Van Lingen assisted a Franken basket after Midland had answered with a two point basket.  Leading 85-81 the Defenders sent Midland’s Eamnuel Bryson to the free throw line where he made one shot and Chad Barkema came back with a field goal to extend the lead to 87-82. Midland would get as close as two one more time but Dordt converted its free throws to wrap up the win 96-87.
