Jamestown def. Dordt 110-107 overtime
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team was unable to fight off a late charge by the host Jamestown Jimmies on Wednesday night and fell in overtime 110-107.
The Defenders seized an early 46-23 lead and converted the first eight three-points shots they took in helping to build the lead. Jamestown started the rally in the final seven minutes of the first and had the lead down to 53-46 at halftime.
The Defenders appeared equal to the challenge by scoring on a Chad Barkema basket to start the half and built a 14 point lead with 17:21 left in the game after Garrett Franken nailed a three-point basket.
Jamestown rallied again, this time getting the lead down to 76-74 with 11:11 left in the game. The teams traded buckets with Dordt’s lead never growing beyond five and never shrinking to less than two until the hosts took the first lead since the opening basket of the game with 2:36 left on a Brady Birch offensive rebound and putback.
A Cade Bleeker three-point basket put Dordt up 97-95 and a pair of Ben Gesink free throws gave Dordt a four point lead. Jamestown got an old fashioned three-point play to get within one. Dordt had a chance to put the game away in the closing moments but made one of two free throws opening the door for Isaiah Dobson to tie the game on a lay up with two seconds remaining in regulation.
Dordt had a three-point lead in overtime with Chad Barkema starting the scoring with a long shot and the lead changed hands four times in the extra session. Dordt had the ball down 108-107 in the closing moments but a shot in the middle of the lane popped out and Jamestown seeled the game with free throws with less than a second left for the 110-107 difference.
Dordt was 37-69 from the field and 18-28 from the arc and converted 15-19 free throws.
Jamestown was 47-83 from the field and 7-21 from the three-point line and made 9-10 free throws.
Dordt was outrebounded 42-28 and surrendered 12 offensive rebounds.
Cade Bleeker scored a career high 19 for Dordt on 9-10 shooting. Garrett Franken added 23 with six rebounds.
Chad Barkema had 18 and Jesse Jansma 11. Jansma and Ben Gesink each had five assists.
Jamestown was led by Dobson’s 30 points and Terrell Alfred had 28.
Both teams are now 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the GPAC.
Dordt will host Midland on Saturday at 4:00 in GPAC play.
