Dordt def. Peru State 86-67
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team outscored Peru State 24-12 in the final ten minutes of the first and half and used a 49-32 halftime to win 86-67 on Saturday afternoon at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center.
The two teams were close for the first ten minutes with three ties before a Chandler Brunsting three-pointer put the hosts up 25-18 with 10:43 left in the half. Peru State converted a basket on the ensuing possession and had the lead down to 25-20 at the midpoint of the half. Dordt grabbed its first double digit lead with a Josh Van Lingen basket and a Garrett Franken three-point basket put the Defenders up by double digits for good at 42-30 with 2:39 left in the half.
Dordt went up 47-30 on a Jesse Jansma basket but Peru State answered with :16 left. Jansma converted a runner at the buzzer to give Dordt a 49-32 lead.
Chad Barkema started the second half with a basket and Dordt’s lead was never less than 15 the entire second half before settling for the 86-67 win.
Dordt was 30-68 from the field for 44 percent and 13-36 from the arc.
Peru State was 26-67 from the field for 39 percent success and 6-24 from the three-point line.
Dordt converted 13-23 free throws and Peru State 9-16.
Both teams had 45 rebounds and Dordt had 11 turnovers while the Bobcats had 15.
Garrett Franken led all players with 17 points on 7-12 shooting and he had seven rebounds with two assists.
Jesse Jansma scored 16 with six rebounds and four assists.
Chad Barkema scored in double figures for the third straight game with 11 points and had four rebounds.
Chandler Brunsting scored nine off the bench and was 2-3 from the three-point line while Marcus Winterfeld and Cade Bleeker each had eight. Josh Van Lingen added seven points and seven rebounds.
Peru State was led by Devon Colley with 16 points and Henry Tanksley scored 14 one day after erupting for 39.
Dordt is now 8-3 while Peru State slips to 3-4.
Dordt returns to GPAC play on Wednesday night when the Defenders travel to face Jamestown. The Defenders conclude the home portion of their pre-Christmas schedule against Midland on Saturday, December 7.
