Dordt def. Dickinson State 93-90
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defenders held off a pesky Dickinson State upset attempt for a 93-90 win over the visiting Blue Hawks in play at the Dordt Classic hosted at the De Witt Gym. The Classic will continue on Saturday afternoon with a pair of games.
Dordt started the game down 6-0 but rallied for seven points in a row after a timeout to lead 7-6 with 16:43 left in the half. A 9-0 run by Dordt capped by a Marcus Winterfeld three-point shot put the Defenders up 19-11 and the hosts appeared poised to open up a comfortable lead.
Dickinson State battled back to tie the game at 32-32 with 5:24 left in the first half and Dordt settled for a 41-37 halftime lead after Kendrick Van Kekerix knocked down a floater with just over a minute left in the half for the final points of the first half of play.
Dordt had a 53-45 lead after a Garrett Franken basket with 16:51 left in the game but the Blue Hawks rallied again to tie the game at 57-57 with 14:39 left in the game. A Chandler Brunsting three-point basket stopped the threat for the time being and Dordt again pushed the lead to eight at 73-65 on a Josh Van Lingen three-point basket with 9:34 left in the game.
Six unanswered points by the Blue Hawks got them back in the game and a 6-0 run later by the visitors put them up 85-83 with 2:50 left in the game. Dickinson State still held a two-point lead at 87-85 but a Garrett Franken basket in the paint tied the game with 1:55 left. Chad Barkema blocked Dickinson State’s next shot attempt and the Defenders got the ball to Barkema who was fouled but was unable to convert free throws. Dordt secured three offensive rebounds to extend the possession and it was Barkema who finally knocked down a short shot for an 89-87 lead.
Dordt forced a turnover on the next possession and Marcus Winterfeld was fouled and he made both free throws to extend the lead to 91-87.
Dickinson State got a three-point basket by Montel Carlow but Chandler Brunsting’s ensuing free throws gave Dordt its final margin of victory.
Dordt was 36-70 from the field and 11-29 from the three-point line while converting 10-18 free throws.
Dickinson State was 36-75 from the field and 15-24 from the arc while converting 3-4 free throws. The Blue Hawks made 9-10 three-point shots in the second half.
Dordt had a 42-36 rebounding advantage and had 13 offensive rebounds.
Both teams had eight turnovers.
Chad Barkema led Dordt with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, a blocked shot and two steals and he made 8-9 field goals.
Cade Bleeker scored 13 points and had five rebounds.
Chandler Brunsting scored 13 and had four assists. Jesse Jansma added 12 points and Marcus Winterfeld had nine.
Dickinson State was led by Montel Carlow with 24 points on 8-10 shooting from the three-point line.
Malcom Hill scored 17 points with seven rebounds and Kenny Jackson had 15 points and four assists.
Dordt will host Peru State at 4:00 on Saturday while Dickinson State will face Northwestern at 2:00.
