Dordt def. Briar Cliff 82-63
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team won its second GPAC contest of the season with strong second half performance to beat Briar Cliff 82-63.
Dordt led 39-38 at halftime after Briar Cliff converted 9-19 three-point shots to cut a one-time Dordt lead from six to the one point difference the teams had at halftime.
Dordt started the second half with a Cade Bleeker basket followed by a pair of Garrett Franken baskets to extend the lead to 45-38. Briar Cliff had the lead down to three at 47-44 but back to back three-point baskets by Chad Barkema put the Defenders up 53-44. The lead was never less than seven the rest of the game.
Briar Cliff appeared poised to work itself back into the game with 8:20 left and trailed 66-57. Bleeker and Ben Gesink had back to back baskets and Josh Van Lingen tossed in a three-point shot to end the threat and Dordt finished with the 19 point win.
Dordt was 29-67 from the field and 7-19 from the three-point line for 43 and 37 percent success.
Briar Cliff was 22-57 and 9-29 from the arc for 39 and 31 percent. Briar Cliff was limited to 8-28 shooting in the second half and 0-10 from the arc.
Dordt had a 50-31 rebounding edge and was limited to two offensive rebounds.
Chad Barkema had a season high 19 points for the Defenders and Garrett Franken had 18 points and six rebounds.
Marcus Winterfeld came off the bench to score eight and grab six rebounds. Jesse Jansma and Chandler Brunsting each added eight points and Bleeker and Van Lingen each had seven.
Jansma, Bleeker, Barkema, Franken and Brunsting all had six rebounds.
Briar Cliff was led by Jackson Lamb’s 25 points and six rebounds. Ethan Freidel had 17 points.
Dordt is 2-2 in the league and 6-3 overall.
Briar Cliff slips to 7-2 and 1-2.
The Defender men are off until Friday, November 29 when they host Dickinson State. Dordt will also face Peru State on Saturday, November 30. The Defenders resume GPAC play on Wednesday, December 4 at Jamestown.
