Dordt def. Viterbo  73-66

Viterbo started fast but it was a Dordt run late in the first half that swung the game into its favor on the way to a 73-66 win in a non-conference game hosted by Northwestern in Orange City.

The V-Hawks scored seven in a row to start the game and led 19-8 with 13:27 left in the first half after a Noah Fredrickson three-point basket.   Dordt rallied to tie the game at 23-23 with 6:29 left in the first half on a Cade Bleeker three-pointer.

Viterbo rattled off six in a row after the tie before Marcus Winterfeld stopped the bleeding with a basket at the 4:16 mark.  A Jesse Jansma basket cut the gap to two points and a free throw by Josh Van Lingen narrowed it to 29-28.  Van Lingen’s next free throw missed and Chandler Brunsting snagged the rebound and kicked a pass to Cade Bleeker who knocked down a wing-jumper. Brunsting then got a steal and was fouled. He made the ensuing free throw and missed the second. This time it was Chad Barkema who snared the rebound and Bleeker again got free for a three-pointer from the same spot for a 35-29 advantage.

Bleeker wasn’t finished as he made one more three-point basket after Viterbo free throw to make the halftime score 38-30.

The Defenders got up by as many as 13 early in the second half but the VHawks rallied to within 50-47. A Ben Gesink layup started a run that saw the Defenders get up 61-49 with 8:17 left in the game.

Viterbo made one more charge and got within 63-60 with 3:36 left in the game. Chad Barkema had bucket and free throw to pushed the lead back to six and the difference was never less than six as Dordt settled for the 73-66 win.

Dordt converted 25-57 field goals and 9-27 three-point shots and 14-21 free throws.

Viterbo was 28-62 from the field and 5-17 from long range.  Viterbo attempted nine free throws and made five.

Dordt’s rebounding edge was 42-34 but the Defenders committed 15 turnovers to nine for the VHawks.

Cade Bleeker led the Defenders with 19 points and he had eight rebounds.

Chad Barkema scored 14 with nine rebounds and Jesse Jansma and Garrett Franken each had eight points.

Tyree Young scored 19 for the V Hawks and shared game honors with Bleeker.

Dordt will take a 3-1 record into its game with Ozark Christian at noon on Saturday while Viterbo is now 1-2 and plays Northwestern at 4:00.
