Mayville State defeats Dordt 96-80
HOW IT HAPPENED
A slow start by the Dordt Defenders in their second game of the weekend in North Dakota led to a 96-80 loss for the Defenders at Mayville State.
Dordt got down 19-7 with 13:40 left in the first half and played catch up the rest of half, eventually pulling even at 35-35 with 4:21 left in the half on a Ben Gesink free throw. Dordt led briefly when Garrett Franken made one of two free throws for a 36-35 advantage but the Vikings outscored Dordt 5-2 the rest of the half and led 40-38 at the break.
A Franken basket with 15:45 left in the game got Dordt within 50-49 but that’s as close as the Defenders got as the Vikings matched their double digit first half lead with a 65-53 lead with 12:22 left in the game. The Defenders came back to within six at 81-75 on a Franken three-point basket with 5:33 left in regulation but a three-point basket by the Comets ended the threat and they pulled away to win 96-80.
Dordt as 32-71 from the field and 3-17 from the arc while converting 13-25 free throws.
Mayville State was 34-64 from the field and 13-29 from the three-point line and the hosts made 15-21 free throws.
Mayville State had a 40-34 rebounding edge.
Franken had a game high 24 points and he had 11 rebounds.
Zach Bussard came off the bench to score 20 and had seven rebounds.
Ben Gesink and Josh Van Lingen each had nine points and Jesse Jansma converted eight. Gesink had five assists.
Dordt is 2-1 while Mayville State improves to 4-1.
Dordt will play a pair of games next Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9 at Northwestern in Orange City against Viterbo and Ozark Christian.
