Dordt defeats Waldorf 100-63
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team jumped out to an early lead, withstood a charge the visiting Waldorf Warriors midway through the first half and rolled to a 37 point win in its season opener on Friday night in Sioux Center, Iowa.
A Jesse Jansma basket with 16:10 left in the first half put Dordt up 13-4. Waldorf responded with a 13-7 run and got within 20-17 with 11:17 left in the half.
A Caleb Harmsen basket stopped the charge and Dordt made it a double digit game for good with another Jansma three-point basket with 5:46 remaining in the half for a 31-20 difference. An 8-0 run by the Defenders to end the half put Dordt up 57-28.
Waldorf briefly got the lead under 30 points but and 8-0 run with baskets by Garrett Franken and Chandler Brunsting put Dordt up 67-32 and it was never closer than 33 the rest of the game.
Jansma led all players with 22 points as he was 6-9 on three-point shots and scored 19 in the first half.
Franken added 11 points and had eight rebounds.
Zach Bussard came off the bench to score 10 and had seven rebounds.
Brunsting added nine point and Cade Bleeker scored eight in his Dordt debut.
Chad Barkema handed out a team high four assists and had eight rebounds to share game honors with Franken.
Gabriel Munoz led Waldorf with 20 points.
Dordt was 37-82 from the field and 15-34 from the three-point line with 11-16 free throw success.
Waldorf was 23-60 from the field and 5-19 from the arc and converted 12-17 free throws.
Dordt had a 51-32 rebounding advantage and forced 22 turnovers.
Dordt is now 1-0 and Waldorf falls to 0-2.
Dordt will travel to North Dakota next weekend to face Valley City State on Friday night and Mayville State on Saturday.
