HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defenders used a stingy defense in the second and third quarters to take control of their game with the Mount Marty Lancers on Wednesday night in Yankton and secured their 22nd win of the season with a 63-42 win.

The Defenders trailed 8-4 before going on a seven point run highlighted by two Mya Chmielewski steals and baskets. Mount Marty was able to recover and led 14-12 at the end of the quarter. The Lancers seemed to have things pointed their way with a basket to start the second quarter but Dordt tied the game with a pair of Rachel Evavold free throws and the lead grew to 29-19 at the conclusion of the half as the Defenders limited the hosts to five points in the period.

Dordt tightened its grip on the game with a Jordyn Van Maanen three-point basket and an Evavold basket for a 34-19 lead. Dordt’s lead grew to 42-23 with 3:09 left in the period as the Defenders appeared poised to blow the game open.  Mount Marty was able to trim into the lead and had it back to 42-28 to start the fourth quarter.

The Lancers did close to within 12 midway through the fourth period but Dordt scored on back to back possessions and ran off eight points in a row to extend the lead to 58-38 and won by the final margin of 63-42.
